When you invest in handcrafted furniture, you're not just choosing a style— you’re embracing a legacy of craftsmanship, sustainability, and timeless design.
At Vermont Woods Studios, we celebrate styles that honor those values, and two of our favorites are Shaker and Mission. While both are rooted in American history and built for longevity, each has its own unique personality. Whether your style leans toward minimalist elegance or bold structure, we’ll help you find the perfect fit for your home—and your values.
What is Shaker Style Furniture?
Shaker style furniture is characterized by clean lines, tapered legs, and minimalist designs. It’s known for being practical and simple down to the very last detail. Originally designed in the late 1700’s by followers of the religious group the Shaking Quakers, shaker furniture has become a staple in interior design known for being timeless and elegant.
What is Mission Style Furniture?

Mission style furniture is characterized by rectangular shapes, 90 degree angles, and straight vertical and horizontal lines. First conceived in the Arts & Crafts period at the turn of the 19th century (Also known as the American Craftsman era), mission and craftsman style furniture has maintained popularity in traditional and arts & crafts design circles ever since.
Mission vs. Shaker Furniture
Shaker furniture originated in the late 1700s to early 1800s within the Shaker religious communities of New England. It’s known for its minimalist aesthetic, featuring tapered legs, subtle mushroom knobs, and an overall emphasis on function over ornamentation. Commonly crafted from cherry or maple, Shaker pieces are typically finished in lighter tones that highlight the natural beauty of the wood. The craftsmanship is understated but intentional, reflecting a quiet refinement.
Mission furniture, on the other hand, emerged from the Arts & Crafts movement in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. With its bold, angular lines, flat panels, and visible mortise-and-tenon joinery, Mission style brings a grounded, solid presence to any space. It’s often built from quartersawn oak and finished in rich, dark stains that enhance its robust character. While Shaker furniture feels light and restrained, Mission furniture adds weight and structure to your home.
Why Both Styles Matter
At Vermont Woods Studios, we admire both Shaker and Mission styles because they embody the same values we do: timeless design, lasting quality, and respect for materials. Each piece is a celebration of real craftsmanship— free from shortcuts, built with intention, and designed to stand the test of time. When paired with sustainably harvested hardwoods and made by local Vermont artisans, these styles become more than furniture— they become a responsible investment in beauty, function, and the future.
