Remembering Those Who Sacrificed Everything for Us
Memorial Day is a time of remembrance, honoring those heroes who gave their lives in service to our country. The simple act of planting a tree can honor their legacy for generations.
These mature maple trees are among hundreds that grace the property where our furniture showroom lives in Southeastern Vermont. Every year at this time, we have thousands of maple seedlings that spring up, hoping to out-compete other plants on the property. This year we decided to nurture some of those seedlings for our customers and our community. We think there are infinite reasons to plant a tree, but Memorial Day seems particularly relevant.
We Have a Free Maple Tree Seedling for You to Plant
Katrina and I took a break from our computer screens the other day to dig up and pot a dozen of the maple tree seedlings that are so plentiful throughout the grounds at Stonehurst. No matter what your occasion, Memorial Day or otherwise, please stop by and pick up a tree to plant. After all, "The true meaning of life is to plant trees, under whose shade you do not expect to sit," that's according to Nelson Henderson, at least.
Come See What Else We're Growing
This is Katrina (and me). By day, Katrina is a sales consultant at Vermont Woods Studios but as soon as her work is done, she heads outside to work the land. She has generously donated her time to germinate and plant hundreds of vegetable seeds which she's nurturing for customers and community members. The maple tree seedlings are part of Katrina's larger gift to our community. Learn more about the edible landscape she and Jake have created for Stonehurst visitors.
3 More Reasons to Plant A Tree
If I haven't convinced you yet, here are a couple of my favorite quotes to inspire you to plant a tree:
- "Until you dig a hole, you plant a tree, you water it and make it survive, you haven't done a thing. You are just talking." ― Wangari Maathai
- “Acts of creation are ordinarily reserved for gods and poets, but humbler folk may circumvent this restriction if they know how. To plant a pine, for example, one need be neither god nor poet; one need only own a shovel.” - Aldo Leopold
- "The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.” ― Chinese proverb
