Our Hardwood Furniture Finishes
Our furniture is finished with eco-friendly coatings that are prepared to enhance the natural beauty of the wood and protect against moisture and normal wear. Our finishes are gentle and non-toxic but if you suffer from MCS (Multiple Chemical Sensitivities) please be sure to order wood samples prior to ordering furniture so you can test compatibility.
Each of our furniture makers uses their own time-tested favorite finishes. Below is further information about each craftsman’s preferred approach to finishing.
Vermont Furniture Designs
The collections produced by Vermont Furniture Designs are coated with a traditional hand-rubbed oil and wax to produce a smooth, satin finish on their Cherry and Walnut pieces. A coat of carnauba wax seals in moisture and the natural linseed oils enhance the natural color and beauty of the wood. The rich patina of the wood is preserved and deepened by regular oiling and, over time, several coats build up a protective layer.
On their Maple furniture, Vermont Furniture Designs uses a tung oil finish. The tung oil is more easily absorbed into dense Maple wood while replicating the smooth look of the Cherry and Walnut finishes.
All finishes applied to these pieces have low volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Once the finish has dried, there will be little to no VOCs. Vermont Furniture Designs pieces benefit from periodic oiling. Read more about general care for these pieces:

Maple Corner Woodworks
The craftsmen at Maple Corner Woodworks use linseed oil to produce a beautiful, satin finish on their Cherry and Walnut beds, table legs, and case piece fronts and sides. The tops of their Cherry and Walnut case pieces are given a protective, finish achieved with hand-rubbed urethane oil. Dining table tops are finished with a hard coat, semi-gloss urethane finish, resistant to food and liquid substances.
- Maple wood, which is too dense to absorb linseed oil, is treated with urethane oil for a clean, satin finish.
