What Are Farm Tables?

Although the term "farm table" can apply to all sorts of different furniture designs, when we think farm table we usually think a solid wood, rectangular table with four legs. Often times, farm tables will be made from recycled or reclaimed wood like pine, chestnut, or oak. You'll almost always see eased edges, a straight apron, and either tapered, turned, or straight wood legs. Breadboard ends are fairly common in farmhouse tables, also. More modern farm tables might be made with maple, walnut, or cherry, and you might even find farm tables with metal legs.

Farmhouse Table FAQs

What makes a table a farm table?

While farmhouse tables are certainly popular these days, what sets them apart from other table styles?

Well, a farmhouse table is typically distinguished by its rustic charm and sturdy construction. Typically crafted from solid wood like oak, these tables feature thick, sturdy tops and substantial legs— often in styles like spindle, trestle, or pedestal. The design is both simple and durable, inspired by their origins in rural farmhouses where functionality was often the most important factor in their construction.

How big should a farmhouse table be?

The ideal size of a farmhouse table depends on your space and seating needs. A general guideline is to allow 24 inches of table length per person for comfortable seating.

Common dimensions include:

4–6 people: 60"–72" long
6–8 people: 72"–96" long
8–10+ people: 96"–120"+ long
