How To Turn Dinner Time Back Into Family Time

Traditions Over Technology

As I was thinking about what I wanted to focus this blog post around, I realized something. I can’t remember the last time I had a family meal at the dinner table that wasn’t forced because of a holiday. I mean, yes, my family eats dinner each night, usually something cooked at home, but we don’t sit around the table. We maybe eat in the living room while watching the news or eat while working on our laptops. And, I don’t think I’m alone.

We all adapted in the age of technology and I think along the way we accidentally gave up traditions that help keep us balanced and grounded. We’ve become so accustomed to our bubbles that we forget to reach out to those closest to us.
Sitting down together around the dinner table can be one of the most cathartic moments of your day. It allows you vent a frustration from work or school. You can talk about your favorite shows or world events. You can admire or admonish a new experimental dish. You can share an extra glass of wine or battle over the last biscuit. It’s where memories are made.

So, instead of going over our current furniture sale like usual--I’ll still give those details at the end--I want to give you ideas on how to turn dinner time back into family time.

Leave phones and devices in another room

The first step in making dinner time about family is to keep your devices out of the room. There should be no texting. No getting up to a take a call (unless it's an emergency). All TVs should be off. Maybe a little music can be playing, but I’ve found the best way to focus on the people around you, is prevent distractions from getting in the way. Be in the moment with your family and friends.

Pledge to have at least one meal a week at the table together

Everyone is busy, I get that, so sometimes planning a time for everyone to be at the table together can be nearly impossible. Pledge to have at least one meal at the table together each week. Choose a day that you know everyone is usually home, like a Sunday evening.

Make a bet or create a competition

Create a competition, this could be especially successful with teenagers and young children. You can say the first person to check a device has to clear the table or do the dishes after dinner. You can keep track of everyone’s score and really turn it into something fun for everyone.
These are just a couple ideas on how to turn your dinner time back into a time to connect with your family. I’d love to hear your ideas or what works for your family. Let me know in the comments section! For more information on our current dining sale sale, click here.
