VWS Joins 1% for the Planet

What's 1% for the Planet?

One Percent for the Planet is a global non-profit whose members contribute at least 1% of their annual sales revenue to environmental causes. Their mission is to "activate an alliance of businesses financially committed to creating a healthy planet." It was founded in 2002 by Yvon Chouinard (founder of Patagonia) and Craig Mathews (founder of Blue Ribbon Flies).

Why Did We Join?

At Vermont Woods Studios we were founded for a specific purpose. It may sound odd but making beautiful wooden furniture was only our secondary purpose. Our primary purpose was - and is - forest conservation. Since the start we've been donating a portion of our proceeds to environmental charities that plant trees. We joined One Percent for the Planet, looking to increase our impact by collaborating with like minded people.

One Percent, That's All?

One percent may not sound like a big deal but in the furniture industry, profits are only about 5% of revenue. So 1% of revenue is about 20% of profits. That's a big deal, right? For example, if Wayfair donated 1% of their revenue ($13 Billion in 2020) that would be $130 Million. What are you waiting for, Wayfair? The planet needs your help.

100,000 Trees to Fight Climate Change & Create Habitat

If all goes well and we meet our revenue goals at Vermont Woods Studios this year, our 1% donation to partners like Forests for Monarchs will be enough to plant nearly 100,000 trees. We're excited about that impact as it will help fight climate change and restore habitat for wildlife. We hope you're excited too because after all, none of this would be possible without you. Thanks a million... together we're making the world a better place.

She is a CEO who brakes for salamanders, has bottle-fed rescued squirrels and spent her vacation building furniture for a rural school in Costa Rica. She believes in the future and in the people who will build it. A former distance-learning professor at Tulane University with a master’s in environmental health & safety, she turned an interest in forest conservation and endangered species into a growing, local business. She delivers rainforest statistics at breakneck speed, but knows how to slow down and appreciate the beauty of a newly finished piece of heirloom furniture.
