5 Reasons To Start Using A Desk Again

When did using a desk become a thing of the past?

I want you to think about the last few homes you visited. Do remember if they had an office or designated area in their home for a desk? When I think about, the majority of the homes I visit, in fact don’t have an office space and if they do, it’s seldom used.
When did using a desk become taboo? While I know we won’t come up with an exact answer here, I have a hunch that it’s related to our constant on-the-go mentality and separation anxiety from our electronics.

So I say it’s time to reclaim the desks place in our homes and here’s why:

  • Organization: I’ve been living without a desk for almost two years and I cannot tell you how much it makes me want to pull my hair out. I have paperwork all over the place and can never find the things I’m looking for. You don’t have to be Martha Stewart organized, but a desk or office space allows you to centralize things like bills, lesson plans, meeting notes and craft supplies.
  • Keep Clutter Hidden: With organization in mind, a desk or office helps keep paperwork, books and mail off the kitchen counters, coffee tables or any other open surface. It’s an easy way to make your home seem tidy-there’s nothing like loose mail or your children’s homework strewn all over the place to make you want to slowly walk back out of your house before anyone notices you.

  • Focus: A desk or an office is a great space to stop procrastinating and get down to work. When you try to get your work done anywhere else in your home, there’s so much opportunity to be distracted. If you work at the breakfast nook, you may remember you need to buy groceries or do the dishes, if you’re in the living room you may be tempted to turn on the TV and so on. Sitting at a desk signals to your brain that it is time to work.
  • Separate Work and Relaxation: I don’t know many people that dread going to bed. There’s nothing like climbing into your bed after a long day and snuggling in-between the sheets and blankets. When you start checking emails or writing presentation notes in bed you start to lose that oasis you created for yourself. Leaving electronics at your work desk or office space can help you unplug and unwind more.

  • Creativity: Channel your inner designer and make the space your own! Get creative with it! Most of the time people reluctantly start on their work or bills, but why not create a space that inspires you every day! Whether it’s white, bright colors and a simple writing desk or rich wood, shelf lined walls and an executive desk, make the space right for you! Short on square footage? Find a vacant space and make that section of the room your office. There are no rules saying you can’t make a space multi-functional.

Stop moving your bills around and misplacing those important documents and invest in a new solid wood desk in cherry, maple, oak or walnut wood. There’s nothing more classic than a wood desk and our collection varies from traditional to modern to accommodate whatever your style may be!
