Earth Day 2016 is just a week away on Friday, April 22.
As perhaps the world’s largest community of environmental supporters, Earth Day Network started Earth Day in 1970 and has made great progress in addressing sustainability & climate change. But there is much left to do in protecting our planet for future generations (of people, flora and fauna) and you can help. What can you do?
Plant Some Trees
The Earth Day 2016 theme is “Trees for the Earth” which makes perfect sense to a company that was founded on a mission of forest conservation. We need trees to continue making the beautiful, handcrafted wooden furniture that Vermont is so famous for. But there are hundreds of reasons to plant trees. Here are just a few: trees provide habitat, food, energy, and oxygen for everyone on earth. They filter the air of pollutants including carbon dioxide, thus fighting global warming and climate change. Trees reduce soil erosion and water pollution. They provide shade and buffer us from storms. Trees are beautiful to look at and being around them reduces stress and even helps hospital patients heal faster!
One Dollar Plants Two Trees
If you’re not up for digging in the dirt this Earth Day, you can still plant some trees. Our friend & partner, Jose Luis Alvarez will plant 2 trees for every dollar you donate to the 501(c)(3)non-profit organization he founded called “Forests for Monarchs“. Your trees will be planted in a place they’re desperately needed: Michoacan, Mexico. This is home to the over-wintering grounds for the Monarch butterfly that we’ve been blogging about and trying to help save.
Go Outside and Celebrate
If you don’t have a chance to plant trees you can still go outside, take a deep breath and look around at all the wonders of nature on April 22 (and every day). Happy Earth Day!
