Tomorrow’s Environmental Scientists

“I believe the children are our future. Teach them well & let them lead the way.”     Linda Creed

Third grader looking through a microscope | Environmental Science Field Trip
Every year Vermont Woods Studios sponsors an environmental science field trip for the 3rd graders at Vernon Elementary School VES.  We partner with VES teacher, Lisa McKenney and the Bonnyvale Environmental Education Center BEEC.

Environmental Science | Third graders holding a sample of pond water | BEEC, VES & Vermont Woods Studioss
The kids take a bus from VES to BEEC’s learning center in West Brattleboro. Prior to today, they prepared by studying forest ecology in the classroom. Now it’s time to get some boots on experience with the plants and animals that live in forest ponds & pools.
Third graders studying the forest floor | Environmental Science | Forest Conservation | Vermont Woods Studios
At Vermont Woods Studios, our mission is environmental conservation with a focus on the forest. We get excited when we can help get local kids engaged in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) activities.

You’re looking at the hands that hold the future (and a fishing net).  Life is good.
Mrs McKenney | VES teacher | BEED Field Trip
Mrs McKenney is, no doubt, the world’s best 3rd grade teacher. Every student is well prepared for the field trip. Although the kids have a lot of fun, they understand the importance of learning about the natural world. Microscopes, field guides and sample collection tools are put to good use.
Educators, Mrs McKenney and Emily Hartz review today's discoveries
After the field trip, everyone has a chance to show off their knowledge as Mrs McKenney and Emily Hartz (a naturalist educator from BEEC) quiz them about the days discoveries.

We’re sending our thanks out to Mrs McKenney and all of the folks who helped us put together this environmental learning project for the children.  We hope everyone had as much fun as we did!  See you next year.

She is a CEO who brakes for salamanders, has bottle-fed rescued squirrels and spent her vacation building furniture for a rural school in Costa Rica. She believes in the future and in the people who will build it. A former distance-learning professor at Tulane University with a master’s in environmental health & safety, she turned an interest in forest conservation and endangered species into a growing, local business. She delivers rainforest statistics at breakneck speed, but knows how to slow down and appreciate the beauty of a newly finished piece of heirloom furniture.
