How a Working Forest Contributes to a Healthier Ecosystem

Last updated on September 29th, 2022 at 02:48 pm

By managing our own forest here in Vermont since 2013, we have witnessed the beautiful harmony of a healthy ecosystem. When Vermont Woods Studios outgrew the spare bedroom in Peggy’s home, our team searched for a permanent home. Above all, our goal was to find a space that would reflect the values of the company and offer a home to showcase the works of Vermont’s finest furniture craftsmen. After a long search, we found Stonehurst. As you can imagine, we love every minute we get to spend out in our forest!

Tristan Fletcher: Welcome to The Woods

Last updated on February 28th, 2019 at 04:04 pm

Tristan’s been learning the Vermont Woods Studios ropes from his dad since he was barely a teenager. I took this snapshot a couple years ago when we were renting a tiny office space from Teddy George at George’s Mill in Vernon.

This isn’t the first time I’ve had the pleasure of welcoming Tristan Fletcher into our family of hardworking fine furniture specialists at Vermont Woods Studios.  Tristan’s been helping us since back in the day when we were working out of the guest bedroom in my house.  He was barely a teenager when we started recruiting him to help with data entry and photo-shopping.  Over the years he’s added additional skills like computer networking and troubleshooting to his repertoire.  Not to mention lawn-mowing, wood cutting/stacking and showroom cleaning.

Come to think of it, Tristan’s probably a serious competitor to Ken and Loryn when it comes to winning the VWS “jack of all trades” award.

Here's Tristan and fellow "groundskeepers" at Stonehurst last summer. The foursome (from left, Teagen Fletcher, Riley Farabaugh, Trenton Fletcher and Tristan)
Here’s Tristan and fellow “grounds keepers” at Stonehurst last summer. The foursome (from left, Taegen Fletcher, Riley Farabaugh, Trenton Fletcher and Tristan) managed to keep smiling (mostly) throughout  the process of cutting and stacking 40 cords of wood.

When I asked Tristan how he acquired his expertise with computers he said he got interested by playing online video games. “While at my friend’s house I saw his custom computer and at that moment it started my interest. As a computer gamer the technology is never enough so I tinker and get as much performance as I can. New leading edge things come out which make the computer work better/faster and instantly I need to have them.

I’ve been customizing computers for about 3 years.  There’s nothing like having all the separate parts and spending a day building and putting a computer together to experience the final product and being able to say “I made that”.

Everyone’s excited about having Tristan on board full time now at Stonehurst. We’ve stationed him in the Brainiac Room with Neville and Martin where he’ll be helping them turn our dreams into reality.  It’s great to have you on board full time, Tristan!

Nina Markiw: Welcome to the Woods

Last updated on February 28th, 2019 at 04:06 pm

Nina Markiw | Welcome to Vermont Woods Studios Fine Furniture

Today it’s my great pleasure to welcome our newest team member, Nina Narkiw to Vermont Woods Studios.  As a professional photographer, Nina will be working with Dennis and Kelsey in our Marketing department.  Her focus will be on conveying the beauty and quality of Vermont’s fine furniture to those who are unable to visit our Stonehurst showroom and see it in person.

A graduate of Johnson State College with a BA in Studio Art and a concentration in photography, Nina made the Presidents List and graduated magna cum laude.  She owns White Blossom Art, a small business that offers wedding photography, fine art photography and paintings.  In her “spare time” Nina helps in the family’s floral business Checkerberry Hill, which specializes in custom floral designs for weddings and other special events.

Photography isn’t her only expertise.  Nina also has a passion for painting.

For Nina, “art is a way of life and not just a hobby”.  At Vermont Woods Studios we feel very lucky to have her caliber of talent and drive on our team.  Please join me in extending a warm welcome to Nina on our Facebook!

Kelsey Eaton Dances into the Woods

Last updated on February 28th, 2019 at 04:07 pm

Kelsey Eaton, Marketing Maven at Vermont's Online Fine Furniture Store

Finding people who want to work at Vermont Woods Studios is easy, but finding just the right person for a particular job opening is hard.  Over the last few years, whenever we’ve advertised a job opening, we’ve had 50-100 applicants express interest.  About 25% of them are excellent candidates and we usually end up interviewing about 5-10 people for each opening.

As with any employer, we’re looking for people who are smart, hard-working, driven, creative and easy to get along with.  We also consider who the new employee will be spending most of their time with and try to make sure there is a good fit between the personalities.  Beyond that though, there is something intangible involved in selecting the right person.  In Kelsey Eaton’s case it was a spirit of determination and courage and a notion that anything is achievable.  Here’s a little bit about her background:

Kelsey’s a recent graduate of Green Mountain College in Poultney, Vermont where she earned her BS in Communications with a concentration in Media Practices.  She is now pursuing a masters degree in Internet marketing at Full Sail University.  Kelsey’s career in marketing began at age 11 when she created an e-zine called The Underworld– a weekly email publication that featured her own original poetry and photography as well as music reviews and celebrity gossip.

While at Green Mountain College, Kelsey was selected as Art Director and Marketing Manager for the school’s monthly publication, The Mountaineer.  Besides using social media to connect with supporters, Kelsey also employed telemarketing– a feat no ordinary person could ever survive, right?

After graduating from GMC Kelsey worked her own freelance designer business, doing a variety of graphic design, writing, and photography projects, including work for Poultney’s famous Full Belly Deli.

Now she spends her time working with Dennis in our Marketing “Department” (that would be Dennis and Kelsey).  She reaches out to customers and friends, promoting Vermont made fine furniture to local, regional and national media outlets as well as Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Houzz and the Vermont Furniture Blog.  In her free time, Kelsey teaches belly dancing (Loryn and Liz are her star pupils) and enjoys music and writing.

Help us welcome Kelsey Eaton to Vermont Woods Studios by giving her a thumbs up on Facebook!

Michelle Rooks Brings a Little Drama Into the Woods

Last updated on February 28th, 2019 at 04:07 pm

Michelle Rooks: Welcome to the Vermont Woods Studios
We are proud to be able to  introduce you to Michelle Rooks, our new Customer Service Representative at Vermont Woods Studios.  Besides working with our furniture makers to accurately relay and monitor your orders, Michelle is in charge of performing arts education for the office. Unfortunately we missed seeing her act in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and The Sound of Music (above) but soon we’ll get to see her in Les Mis and Shrek.

One of the reasons we feel so lucky to be moving in to Stonehurst later this week is that it’s located a block away from the house of a local celebrity (yes, famous people do live here in Vernon– well, famous to us, anyway).   Thespian, Michelle Rooks is our new Vermont Woods Studios Customer Service Representative by day.  But on weekends, nights and holidays you can often find Michelle “acting out” at Ja’Duke Performing Arts Theater in neighboring Turners Falls, MA.

After her first full week at Vermont Woods Studios, when she was heading home after work on Friday afternoon, Michelle casually mentioned that she was going to perform that night as a French maid in an Alfred Hitchcock thriller called The Rope.  She invited us to see the play, but I think she was a bit surprised when Douglas, Liz, Sean, Loryn, Kendall and I all showed up in the front row to cheer her on.  We had a great time and can’t wait to attend Michelle’s next couple plays:  Les Miserables and Shrek, the Musical.

Michelle has a BS in Journalism and Advertising with a minor in Animal Science.  Her professional background includes expertise in the publishing world encompassing such areas as editing, photo manipulation, desktop publishing and proofreading.  Customers will appreciate her eye for detail… as do our furniture makers!

Michelle lives down the street with her husband Chris, two beautiful children and Faith, their lovable rescue dog.  She is an active volunteer at her church and at the kids’ school.  We are fortunate that she’s worked us into her very busy schedule!  We love her Midwestern sensibilities and wry sense of humor that keep us grounded, even on our craziest days.  Welcome aboard, Michelle!

Sean Henry: Welcome To The Woods!

Last updated on May 12th, 2022 at 04:18 pm

Sean Henry - Welcome to the Woods!
Please help me welcome Sean Henry to Vermont Woods Studios Fine Furniture. He’s becoming a great Sales and Customer Service Representative. Liz and Heather are supposed to be training him but in the back of her mind (or front?)  Liz thinks we hired Sean to get her coffee and shine her shoes.   What’s up with that?

I can’t believe how lucky we’ve been at Vermont Woods Studios Fine Furniture this year.  Somehow we’ve been able to find 6 new staff members, all extraordinary in their capabilities and drive, not to mention passion for our green mission.  If you’ve ever owned or worked at a small company, you know it’s not easy to find just the right professionals to bring on board.  Small businesses need people who can work under pressure but go with the flow, leap tall buildings in a single bound and take out the trash, be friendly to customers and co-workers but clam up and put their nose to the grindstone when it’s time to crank out the work.  Already Sean seems to be juggling those things with finesse.

He’s working for Douglas alongside Liz and Heather G as a Sales and Customer Service Representative.  I’ll try to give you some inside scoop on him, so you can surprise him if he answers the phone next time you call.  Let’s see.  Before Sean came to us, he owned and operated his family business–one of Brattleboro’s favorite restaurants, the SteakOut.  Owning a restaurant?  That was our first clue that he knew how to work hard.

Sean holds a BS degree in Business Administration from the University of Vermont where he studied financial and office management. While working his way through school, he sold Cutco knives.  Now I love Cutco products (they’re made in America, by the way) but they’re not exactly an easy sell.  When was the last time you happily welcomed a door-to-door salesman into your home?  Right.  So anyone who can sell anything door to door gets my respect.

Liz and Heather have been trying to dig up some dirt on Sean (it’s so competitive around here) but at this point– still nothing.  It’s early though so stay tuned.  They’ll manage to unearth something good.

And speaking of Liz… could it be that she actually believed Douglas when he said we were interviewing for a personal assistant for her?  Hmmm.  That could explain why she keeps asking Sean to get her coffee and shine her shoes.

Stay up to date on Sean’s adventures with Liz, Heather and other enigmatic personalities at Vermont Woods Studios by visiting our Facebook now and then.

Loryn Enters The Woods

Last updated on February 28th, 2019 at 04:08 pm

Loryn loves being outside, playing soft-ball, walking, hiking and staying involved with the agricultural community. Oh… and harvesting cranberries!

Please help me welcome Loryn, our new staff member to Vermont Woods Studios.  Loryn joins us as a Marketing Assistant. Along with her talent for writing and communications, she brings a passion for nature and conservation.

As a senior at UMass Amherst Loryn has developed her own individual curriculum in Outreach and Communications in Conservation.  She’s had a long-standing committment to sustainable agriculture, having worked with the National Association of Conservation Districts NACD, the Natural Resources Conservation Service NRCS and Future Farmers of America FFA.

Loryn’s already busy working with Manjula and Kendall on improving our website and putting her writing skills to work by editing and blogging.  She’ll be involved in many other aspects of our work down the road as we continue to discover her endless enthusiasm and creativity.

Welcome to the Woods, Loryn.  We’re glad you’re here!

Welcome to Vermont Woods Studios, Heather G!

Last updated on February 28th, 2019 at 04:06 pm

Heather G settles in during her 3rd day at Vermont Woods Studios

We are excited to welcome our new Sales Associate, Heather G to our Vermont Made Furniture store this week.  Heather just completed her third day at Vermont Woods Studios and we are all feeling very lucky to have her on our team.

Heather’s background is in banking and sales.  She is fluent in American Sign Language and certified in First Aid, CPR, and Crisis Prevention Intervention.  It’s nice to have those skills around, just in case!

Welcome to Vermont Woods Studios, Heather!
Heather rode her bike to work on National Ride Your Bike to Work Day

Did you know that yesterday was National Ride Your Bike to Work Day?  Yes it was and Heather celebrated by riding her bike to work at Vermont Woods Studios.  I’m hoping she inspires me to do the same (I was supposed to ride to work on Earth Day, but I think it was too cold or rainy… or warm or sunny or something).

Anyway if you call in and Heather answers the phone, please take a minute to see how she’s doing and welcome her into the new job.  I think you’ll find, as we have, that she’s a pleasure to work with.
