Making Shaker Furniture Your Own
I recently wrote about how Shaker furniture is known for its simplicity…that the design is rooted in the Shaker religion’s founding principles. And while I went into detail about its very traditional design, that doesn’t mean you have to have to stick to that specific style when using Shaker furniture and I’ll show you how!
I decided to choose one of our Shaker dining tables to show how just changing the chairs paired with the table can completely transform the atmosphere in your dining space. I decided to use our New Traditions Round Pedestal Table as a starting point. It’s a simple, sturdy design and beautiful all on its own. From there I chose four of our dining chairs that encompass the majority of our dining collections.
Here are my picks:
Contemporary: So you want the look of Shaker but you don’t want your space to feel out of date and that’s okay. Our Modern High Back Cherry Dining Chairs instantly update any space they’re in. With its unique full length slat back, this chair takes on conventionally designed chairs. Both the top and the bottom of the back are accented with an angled cut to the frame, giving the chair an avant garde design. It’s available in both side and arm chair designs and can come with or without upholstered seats.
Formal: If you’re looking for something formal and sophisticated with Shaker furniture then you already know you won’t find designs with inlays or carvings. But that doesn’t mean you won’t find a chair that will elevate your space to the level you’re looking for. To dress up the New Traditions table, I chose our Round Back Chair. It’s curved back automatically compliments the round table top but it also adds an element of delicacy and elegance not typically seen in a traditional Shaker dining chair. This chair is available upholstered, with or without arms.
Country: Looking for a more traditional take on Shaker furniture? Added to the New Traditions table, our Country Windsor Chair will transform your space into that perfect country cabin feel you’ve been longing for. With its high spindle back and scooped seat the Country Windsor Chair offers not only a classic look, but comfort. Its curved top gives it a subtle contemporary flair. It’s available with or without arms and six Finish options.
Arts & Crafts: Designed with the classic Mission Craftsman style in mind, our Grand Mission Chair offers a modern and simple style of chair. Added to our New Traditions table it will instantly give the room a sense of sophistication. With its almost industrial design, it’s the perfect chair for someone who likes to change the theme of their home decor as its design will compliment almost any style. It comes upholstered and is available with or without arms.
If you’re someone who has to stick to a specific style guideline, we do have options for you, as well. But, if like me you like to mix and match furniture to fit your style, I hope these ideas help.
If you have any questions in regards to the styles and designs of our furniture, our friendly and knowledgeable sales team is always here to assist you at (888) 390-5571. To make your bedroom feel new again, you don’t need to hire a designer and do a total makeover. There are several fun and simplistic things you can do to give your bedroom that freshness you’ve been craving!
1. Decorative pillows: Prices can range from super high end to nice and affordable. My favorite place to shop for new decorative pillows is the local thrift store. Mix & match for an eclectic look, sure to bring new life into your space.
2: Plants: Literally bring life into your bedroom! When things are feeling a little dull and uninspiring, introduce your favorite houseplant to your bedroom. They’re nice to look at, and many are super good for your health!
3. Accessorize with wood furniture: There’s a lot of wood furniture than can be used in a variety of different ways. This beautiful Copeland dining chair is very versatile, and would nicely complement your bedroom furniture! Put a pillow on top of it or leave it on its own, the beauty of this chair speaks for itself and makes a truly stylish accent piece.
4. Change your hardware: Are you currently using regular, cheap hardware for your windows & etc? Switch over to something a little more stylish! There are many options for high quality curtain rods & accessories.
5. Temporary Wallpaper. From bold and daring to modest and traditional, there is a temporary wallpaper for you. Add a statement wall or use it all across the entire bedroom to give you a totally new look without much cost or effort!

As much as I hate to admit it, it’s winter. The sky is dreary, the wind is sharp, and icy snow covers the ground. When you get home at the end of the day, you don’t want your home environment to reflect the outside environment–you want your house to be as cozy and warm as possible! Thankfully, our beautiful cherry furniture has a natural warmth that adds cheer to any space, and when adorned with some of Vermont’s iconic home decor brands, the pairing is perfect for making a comfortable and chic shelter from the harsh weather. With the following furniture ideas, you’ll know what to do to create your winter oasis in no time:
1. Accessorize your wood furniture with blankets:
Blankets are great for creating a warm atmosphere in your home. Aside from literally warming you up, they add soft layers to your decor and give it added coziness (especially when used to accent a wooden bed). Purchasing a new blanket is great, but a handmade quilt is wonderful too.
2. Keep candles lit around the house:
Having candles lit (safely, of course) is a simple and beautiful way to add a touch of warmth to any space. The flame of the candle is sure to make any area of your home feel more alive and more comfy. Using acorns gathered from outside, place your Simon Pearce candle holder on top of an earthy slate base for a look that is as natural as it is stylish.
3. Decorate with warm tones.
Rather than using cool tones like blues and grays, warmer tones like brown, yellow, red and gold are great for giving the illusion of warmth. Your pillows, curtains and bedding are wonderful places to start. These colors look especially beautiful when highlighting the natural tone of Cherry wood furniture.
I hope these furniture ideas will help you and your home avoid the dreary winter blues! What tips would you add? Let me know in the comments or send us a tweet.

Mid Century Modern, A Furniture Revolution.
Mid Century Modern Furniture is a furniture style characterized by clean simplicity and the integration of nature into the home. Gaining its popularity in the 1950s, Mid Century style was frequently used in residential/suburban areas with the goal of introducing modernism into the post-war American home.
The mid 20th century (1934-65 approximately) saw an extreme out-pour of creativity in graphic design, architecture, and furniture design– with styles unlike any before it. In the book “Mid Century Modern: Furniture of the 1950s,” author Carla Greenberg officially cemented the term “mid century modern” into the interior design world, referring to the dramatic style of furniture, art, decor, and architecture borne in this period of American history.
World renowned for its innovative design and contribution to the American interior design and architectural world, Mid Century Style is still adored to this day. In the article “Midcentury Furniture + Grandkid Nostalgia = Modern Trend,” author Andrea Hsu of NPR notes “Open a design magazine or turn on a home decorating show these days, and it’s clear: Midcentury modern is hot.”
So, if Mid Century Modern style is so hot– what exactly is it that people love?
Characteristics of Mid Century Modern Furniture
Lines: Ever watched an episode of Mad Men? Mid Century furniture is a lot like that. Clean, simple lines and smooth edges giving it a dramatically simplistic and sleek look. Before the 1950s, most furniture was intricately decorated with elaborate, complicated lines and adornments. But mid century furniture designers were modernists, they valued simplicity and created their furniture in accordance.
Color: Besides the variety of wood furniture used, other mid Century modern furniture makes use of beautifully vivid colors such as orange, red, yellow, and green paired with neutrals like tan, black or white.
Wood: Popular wood choices were walnut for its extraordinarily modern look, and cherry for its versatility.
Quality: Mid Century modern furniture is known for being expertly crafted by the best furniture designers. While this style of furniture is not as grand or bulky as popular furniture styles before it, it’s lightness in no way takes away from it’s quality or worth.
Many Vermont Woods Studios customers love Mid Century Style– just this week we received a lovely customer photo from a client in New York who’s furniture exemplified the Mid Century simplicity. If you’re unfamiliar with our designs, feel free to browse dozens of mid-century modern furniture designs on our online showroom.

Selecting the Right Dining Table Shape for your Home Décor
With the holidays around the corner (can you believe it?) I figured what better time to talk about dining tables! We have all of these shapes and sizes, but how does that apply to your dining space? What will look best in your room and will you be able to accommodate the right amount of guests? There’s lots to consider when considering the right dining table shapre, and I’ll admit, it can get a little confusing trying to guess what kind of table is best for your situation. Hopefully this post can help to remove some of the mystery about what you’re getting when you order one of our fine, hardwood dining tables.

Attention modern decor lovers! Christmas is almost here! Can you believe it?
In a little more than a week, you’ll be gathered around with your closest friends and family enjoying those timeless Christmas tunes, freshly unwrapped gifts, and eachothers company of course! If you’re doing the hosting this year, is your holiday decor ready?
Holiday decor helps to make the day memorable and keeps your home feeling true to the season.
For modern furniture lovers, finding the decorations to suit your style might be a tricky task as much of the Christmas decor available is very traditional.
Don’t fret, friends! With this list, you’ll find plenty of decor inspiration to suit your contemporary taste!
1. Get colorful!
If you’re tired of the traditional green and red Christmas decoration, or if you are just looking for an alternative to pine needle wreaths, try out this festive idea. Use Christmas ornaments to create a unique wreath arrangement.
2. Chalkboard Decor.
Whether you buy a chalkboard, or go pickup some chalkboard paint and craft something yourself– chalkboard “art” is a cute and clever way to post holiday greetings around your home! They are subtle and can easily be changed to flow with the holiday or the season.
Depending on the frame, this type of decor is suitable for practically any style home.
3. Decorative Lighting.
This particular lighting arrangement is made out of decorative string lights. Similar wire-lights can be found at your local hardware store. Find a glass vase or jar that you love, and add eclectic charm to your home.
Florescent lighting can ruin the intimate holiday mood, so unique alternative lighting sources like this add warmth and romance to your holiday space.
4. Keep it clean
Clean and clutter free are words that define modern interior decor style, and this photo captures it well. The modest accents such as the red decorative pillows, Christmas themed wall art, and red cart/table highlight Christmas spirit while still keeping the home warm, livable, and modern. Notice the use of the mirror, reflecting the tree lights and adding an illusion of space to the room. Very cool!
5. Decorative Dishware
Dishware is not just for eating off of! Laura Zindel’s beautiful dishware is perfect for a holiday display, as it captures the spirit of the season and the smaller things that make winter what it is. These unique pieces are high-quality works of art that can be cherished for years for both their quality and style. You can find some of Laura Zindels work at our showroom!
All in all, modern Christmas decorations come in many different forms. From bursts of color to unique displays of light, it is up to you to decide what elements would bring out the personality and style of your home. Hopefully with some of these interior design tips, you’ll have an easy time finding those last minute decor additions to make your home perfect for the holidays.
Feel free to post your Christmas decor photos on our Facebook page, or share your tips in the comments section. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

Did you know that we recently painted the front doors of Stonehurst? We decided on a color that was bright, unique, and fitting to the beauty of the space. In the spirit of our newest renovation, this blog post explains some common symbolism behind several eclectic front door colors.
1. Red: In Feng Shui, a red door means “welcome!” It’s full of powerful, warm energy. According to folklore, if a weary traveler stumbled upon a home with a red door, they would stop there and surely be welcomed with a good meal and a good nights sleep. A red door is great for people who have lots of guests visiting their home, and who aren’t afraid to make a statement.
2. Blue: As you can imagine, the color blue inspires a feeling of calm and peace to those who see it, and beyond that, a blue door welcomes abundance, growth, and prosperity! Feng Shui suggests that when you walk through a blue door, you can more easily concentrate, focus on personal endeavors, and practice creativity!
3. Yellow: Yellow can cheer you up, fill you with hope, and give you enhanced mental clarity. It also has a warm, nurturing tone. Use a yellow door if you want your home to always be a happy retreat from the outside world.
4. Green: Green is representative of earth, and brings in a feeling of the natural world. Green is associated with growth, balance, and total harmony. Use a green door if you always want to feel a little closer to mother earth!
5. Purple: Purple is actually one of the most popular front door colors, surprisingly! Purple or violet hued doors are commonly associated with spiritual energy, and relaxed, meditative spaces. Sometimes purple doors are used in religious spaces like temples and churches! Purple would be an ideal color for you if you use your home as a low-energy place for quiet, spiritual contemplation, and meditation.
6. White: As you can probably imagine, a white door symbolizes purity, tradition, & freshness. It’s a color that represents things that are untouched and clean! Painting your door white is a good idea if you are someone who loves traditional style, or someone who wants to keep your home looking pristine. Some people say that if you are looking for a fresh start, or if you have just started a new phase in your life whether it be a marriage, a new baby, or a new job– to paint your door white to “start over” and reflect your new life!
Want to know which one of these colors we decided on for the front doors of Stonehurst? Keep your eye out for a new blog, coming early next week! 🙂
