Second Homes in Vermont
Second home sales in Vermont are booming. Last weekend, Ken and I took a drive through Wilmington & Dover in southeastern Vermont, home to resort communities like The Hermitage Club, Mount Snow and Stratton Mountain. New homes & developments are everywhere in the Deerfield Valley, especially luxury second homes and vacation homes.

Why let the table and chairs have all the attention? We think what you put around them is just as important!
You’ve just invested a lot of time and money into your new dining table and chairs. The furniture has arrived and is set up in your dining room. Now what? You have the main attraction, so what you choose to decorate the rest of the room with should be selected with care. You wouldn’t buy a nice suit or dress and pair it with low-quality accessories, would you?
I chose four pieces that should be next on your list.
Dining Bench-It’s nice alternative seating and can be multi-functional if you decide down the road you’d like more chairs. What I like the most about benches is that they give the illusion of fitting more people. And I love the idea of having a lot of people around the table enjoying a meal together.
Sideboard or Hunt Board-More than just a storage space, these pieces can complement or accent your dining table and chairs. A sideboard, traditionally has more cabinet space and a hunt board you’ll notice is more table like with longer legs and usually offers less storage space. They’re great for hiding less commonly used china, silverware and other glassware. And, they act as extra surface space for large meals and decorations.
Mirror-I’m not sure where this idea came from, but I love when dining rooms have a large mirror in them. It gives the illusion of more space, it can take up a lot of wall space if needed to complement the size of your furniture and can be used for practical purposes as well.
Statement Chandelier-There’s nothing I like less than a missed opportunity and I think lighting (which is important for the ambiance of a room) is often one of them. A chandelier is like the icing on the cake. It completes the room. You can have one that’s simple or ornate in design but most importantly it should match the style/theme of your room. You don’t want to go overboard and end up with an eye sore.
Our Classic Shaker Hunt Board and our Modern Shaker Long Sideboard both shown in Cherry.
If you’re unsure of where to start, I’d choose a piece that you know you need. Do you need more storage and surface space, is your dining room small, does it need better lighting, etc. and go from there.
Let us know what you’d get next for your dining space in the comments section below! And remember, now through February 11th you can save up to 20% off your dining furniture purchase during our Winter Dining Furniture Sale.

I love this picture of George Chandler and Reed Hampton, the founders of Hubbardton Forge, Vermont’s 40 year old handcrafted lighting manufacturer. The two men met serendipitously in Paul Aschenbach’s art class at the University of Vermont. How funny that George’s last name means candle maker!
Next stop on my tour of Vermont’s luxury home decor providers is lighting manufacturer, Hubbardton Forge. If you’ve had to buy or install lighting fixtures over the last few decades you’re no doubt aware that most lighting is manufactured in Asia these days and the quality isn’t what it used to be.
Enter Hubbardton Forge of Castleton. The company was established in 1974 by two guys in a barn who set out to revive the forgotten craft of hand-forging raw metal into contemporary designs. Today the business started by George Chandler and Reed Hampton is one of the largest contemporary commercial forges in America. Forty years of practicing time honored principles have built an international reputation for innovative designs, simplicity and integrity.
During my visit to the forge I met with Art Director, Wendy Fannin to show her what we’re doing at Stonehurst and discuss possible strategies to cross-promote our products. Both companies share a passion for simple elegance, traditional craftsmanship and a commitment to environmental stewardship so it seems some synergy could be achieved.
At Vermont Woods Studios we’re looking forward to receiving our first order of Hubbardton forge chandeliers, floor lamps, sconces and table lamps very soon and I’m eager to see how they transform our space. They’ll be accompanied by fine furniture from studios all around the state, glassware from Simon Pearce, ceramics from Laura Zindel and hopefully linens from Anichini and furniture/pottery from Shackleton-Thomas.
Keep posted on our latest inventory and/or plan a trip to see everything in person at Stonehurst!

As much as I hate to admit it, it’s winter. The sky is dreary, the wind is sharp, and icy snow covers the ground. When you get home at the end of the day, you don’t want your home environment to reflect the outside environment–you want your house to be as cozy and warm as possible! Thankfully, our beautiful cherry furniture has a natural warmth that adds cheer to any space, and when adorned with some of Vermont’s iconic home decor brands, the pairing is perfect for making a comfortable and chic shelter from the harsh weather. With the following furniture ideas, you’ll know what to do to create your winter oasis in no time:
1. Accessorize your wood furniture with blankets:
Our Vermont Shaker Moon Bed elegantly shows the natural warmth of Cherry wood. The luxurious purple blanket adds just another layer of warmth and sophistication.
Blankets are great for creating a warm atmosphere in your home. Aside from literally warming you up, they add soft layers to your decor and give it added coziness (especially when used to accent a wooden bed). Purchasing a new blanket is great, but a handmade quilt is wonderful too.
2. Keep candles lit around the house:
A toasty fire, wood furniture, and beautiful home decor… can you imagine a more perfect winter scene?
Having candles lit (safely, of course) is a simple and beautiful way to add a touch of warmth to any space. The flame of the candle is sure to make any area of your home feel more alive and more comfy. Using acorns gathered from outside, place your Simon Pearce candle holder on top of an earthy slate base for a look that is as natural as it is stylish.
3. Decorate with warm tones.
Hubbardton Forge Lighting adds a whimsical yet industrial artisan feeling to your otherwise modestly decorated home.
Rather than using cool tones like blues and grays, warmer tones like brown, yellow, red and gold are great for giving the illusion of warmth. Your pillows, curtains and bedding are wonderful places to start. These colors look especially beautiful when highlighting the natural tone of Cherry wood furniture.
I hope these furniture ideas will help you and your home avoid the dreary winter blues! What tips would you add? Let me know in the comments or send us a tweet.

Selecting the Right Dining Table Shape for your Home Décor
With the holidays around the corner (can you believe it?) I figured what better time to talk about dining tables! We have all of these shapes and sizes, but how does that apply to your dining space? What will look best in your room and will you be able to accommodate the right amount of guests? There’s lots to consider when considering the right dining table shapre, and I’ll admit, it can get a little confusing trying to guess what kind of table is best for your situation. Hopefully this post can help to remove some of the mystery about what you’re getting when you order one of our fine, hardwood dining tables.
“Think sublime style, unstinting details, old-world craftsmanship. The charm of classic lines and modern style. Sensuous textures and saturated colors that dress your home, your life. This is the essence of ANICHINI.” Check out their new design center in Quechee, VT where I took this snapshot. Every direction you look is more charming than the last!
No tour of Vermont’s luxury home decor brands would be complete without a visit to Anichini, Inc. The Green Mountain State is home to this mecca for high end interior designers who feather the nests of the rich and famous. The company, founded 26 years ago by Susan Dollenmaier, has become the “most prestigious brand of luxury textiles and home furnishings”. It is a full spectrum textile company specializing in rare and handcrafted fabrics and products. I visited Anichini’s new design center in Quechee, VT last week while on my tour of Vermont’s top luxury home decor brands. May I just say right here and now that I have never seen a collection of such beautiful and luxurious fabrics in all my life? What an indulgence for the senses. All of them… not just sight… so many different textures and subtle fragrances of linens, cottons, wool, cashmere and other fibers. Wow.
“In an era where the word “luxury” is used to describe everything from a bus ride to a bottle of shampoo, ANICHINI has raised the bar on the definition of “luxury” with textiles that are the ultimate in opulence and craftsmanship.” How would these luxurious Anichini linens, fabrics and textiles look in your home?
Anichini Inc. imports fabrics (Muga silks from Assam, Tibetan cashmere woven in Nepal, Ottoman inspired velvets and tapestries from Turkey, Renaissance replications from Umbria, Linen from Lithuania, Woven silks from Morocco) because they are simply unavailable in the USA. However, as shown in this video (The Craftsmanship of Rural Women) those fabrics are sewn here in Vermont by a group of talented seamstresses in Turnbridge.
Found in the linen closets of royal palaces and celebrities around the world, Anichini fabrics round out Vermont’s luxury home decor brand portfolio. They are future heirlooms that celebrate the “extraordinary designs, rare materials, and traditional techniques that are soon to be lost. ” Come see them for yourself! We hope to be featuring a nice selection of Anichini linens at Stonehurst, which will soon be your launch pad into the world of Vermont’s authentic, handcrafted home furnishings.
Luxury home decor aficionados: do you long for days past when real, honest, human craftsmanship was the means of producing quality, long lasting goods for your home? Are you tired of disposable everything and looking to add authenticity and character to your home– a few things with substance that are designed to be enjoyed forever? Well Vermont has a treat for you. Four of America’s top luxury home decor brands are headquartered in the middle of the Green Mountain state– all within a comfortable driving distance of each other. I made the tour myself last week, while preparing our Stonehurst gallery to begin carrying a selection of items from each company. Here is what I found at my first stop, Simon Pearce.
Simon Pearce Glassware
With the rich history of Irish glass blower Simon Pearce behind it, this company leads the way in high end, hand blown glass and table ware. Headquartered in Windsor Vermont, Simon Pearce creates glass and ceramic “products that are beautifully designed, produced with premium quality materials and time-honored techniques and intended for a lifetime of everyday use”.
Simon Pearce high quality glass bowls, goblets and vases are hand blown by skilled artisans and designed to last a lifetime. I took this picture in Windsor, VT but you can also see glassblowing (and pottery making) at their beautiful facility in Quechee, VT.
Simon Pearce Pottery
The Simon Pearce pottery and stoneware collection includes table lamps, vases, pitchers, dinnerware and gifts. Watch it being made in Windsor and/or Quechee, VT.
Learn more about Simon Pearce, his story and products on his website. Or better yet, come up to Vermont for a visit! You can use Stonehurst, our fine furniture, home decor and art gallery as a launchpad to Simon Pearce and the rest of Vermont’s luxury home decor companies.
It takes a ton of energy to make glass so Simon Pearce located his facility on a falls and installed hydro power. Be sure to call for reservations if you’d like to dine at that beautiful restaurant that juts out over the falls. Both food and view are spectacular.
The other three luxury home decor brands I’m thinking of? Stay tuned, there’s more to come but you’ll find hints on Kelsey’s new Vermont luxury Pinterest board. Let us know on our Facebook, about any other brands you’d like to learn more about.
