VWS Receives Top Sustainability Award 2 Years in a Row

VWS 2021 SFC NWF Award

Top Sustainability Award on the Wood Furniture Scorecard

This calls for a celebration! Your friends at Vermont Woods Studios have earned the highest honor given by the Sustainable Furniture Council SFC and the National Wildlife Federation NWF.   It’s the Top Scorer Award on the Wood Furniture Scorecard and we’ve won it 2 years in a row.  SFC and NWF are non-profits working to improve environmental outcomes in the furniture industry. Their scorecard recognizes furniture retailers for implementing robust policies that drive responsible wood sourcing practices through their supply chains. Only a handful of companies in the world have achieved Top Scorer recognition and we are honored to be among them.

Recognition at the 2021 Fall High Point Market

Sustainability award presentation at the Fall 2021 High Point MarketLast week we joined a panel of experts at the world’s largest furniture trade show in High Point, NC.  Discussion centered around improvements the furniture industry must make in the area of wood sourcing. From left to right: Breegan Jane of HGTV, Peggy Farabaugh of Vermont Woods Studios, Amy Vernon of LazyBoy and Susan Inglis, Executive Director of the Sustainable Furnishings Council SFC.

Why is This Sustainability Award Important?

The furniture industry is the 3rd largest consumer of wood globally (behind the construction and paper industries). Demand for wood has driven global deforestation to the point where it is a leading cause of climate change. We cannot stem global warming without sourcing wood more responsibly. The sustainability award recognizes companies of all sizes that are working to improve their wood sourcing.  This recognition, along with other SFC initiatives is helping the furniture industry move in a sustainable direction.

Responsible Wood Sourcing at Vermont Woods Studios

At VWS, our policy for responsible wood sourcing came before we began building our first piece of furniture.  We founded the company in an effort to use Vermont’s beautiful, sustainable furniture as a way to raise awareness about where wood furniture comes from. Most furniture in today’s market is made with wood that’s illegal or unsustainably harvested. We wanted to provide an eco friendly alternative. Read more about our Responsible Wood Sourcing Policy on our website. See the full list of award winners at Furniture Today.

She is a CEO who brakes for salamanders, has bottle-fed rescued squirrels and spent her vacation building furniture for a rural school in Costa Rica. She believes in the future and in the people who will build it. A former distance-learning professor at Tulane University with a master’s in environmental health & safety, she turned an interest in forest conservation and endangered species into a growing, local business. She delivers rainforest statistics at breakneck speed, but knows how to slow down and appreciate the beauty of a newly finished piece of heirloom furniture.
