Adirondack Chairs: Essential Summer Vacation Equipment

Classic Adirondack Chairs | American Made by Polywood
If you want to feel like you’re vacationing at one of the Adirondack’s Great Camps, check our our Classic Adirondack Furniture collection.  These are pretty authentic replicas of the original Adirondack chair designed by Thomas Lee in Westport, NY back in 1903.

Memorial Day weekend is the time we start thinking about where to go for summer vacation.  Summers are so beautiful (and short) here in Vermont, that many of us don’t go away for vacations.  We tool around here in the Green Mountain State… maybe taking occasional trips to the coast of Maine or other scenic spots around New England.

But whether we’re doing a micro-vacation after work in the back yard or heading to Lake Champlain for the weekend, the Adirondack Chair is considered essential equipment in Vermont.  So with the school year coming to a close and warm weather settling in (well, at least it’s forecast for the coming week), I thought I’d post a quick rundown of some of our most popular Adirondack chairs.  Grab a Long Trail or a margarita while you browse through the selection:

Classic Adirondack Chairs (above)

If you want to feel like you’re vacationing at one of the Great Camps of Lake Placid or Saratoga Springs, then you’ll have to check our our Classic Adirondack Furniture collection.  These are pretty authentic replicas of the original Adirondack chair designed by Thomas Lee in Westport, NY back in 1903.  Comfy and roomy, this outdoor furniture can be customized online in 7 different traditional colors:  teak, sand, mahogany, white, black, green and gray.  The collection includes a tete-A-tete group, a love seat, gliders, rockers, dining furniture and a folding Adirondack chair in addition to the chairs shown above.

Long Island Adirondack Chairs | Made in America by Polywood | Recycled Plastic
Long Island Adirondack Chairs are a modern take-off on classic Adirondack furniture.  Bright and cheerful, this outdoor collection can be customized online in 14 vibrant colors.

Seashell Adirondack Chairs (above)

The Seashell Adirondack Furniture collection is a more high end set, with the main distinction being the size of the pieces.  Seashell pieces are over-sized and up to 50% heavier that the Classic Adirondack and Long Island pieces.  Great for coastal areas where you’ll never have to worry about losing them to the tide or a strong wind!  Available in traditional colors only:  teak, mahogany, sand, white, black, forest green or slate grey.

Polywood South Beach Furniture | Adirondack Chaise Lounge | American Made
P South Beach Furniture collection includes this Adirondack Chaise Lounge.  Customize it online in one of 14 different colors.  Add a Sunbrella cushion for added comfort.

South Beach Adirondack Chairs (above)

The South Beach Adirondack Furniture collection looks much like the Seashell style but it’s smaller, lighter and less expensive. Customize South Beach chairs online in all 14 colors, including the vibrant blues, greens, red and yellow.  The chaise lounge in this collection is shared with the Seashell collection– as I don’t think you would want one any bigger (it weighs in at a hefty 53 pounds).

Kids Furniture | Outdoor Dining Furniture for Children | Polywood Adirondack Style

What is more exciting for kids than having pint-sized furniture of their own?  POLYWOOD has 3 different Adirondack pieces designed specially for the younger generation:  A Kids Picnic Table, a Child-Size Round Dining Table and the South Beach Kids Adirondack Chair.

Is Your Wood Furniture Brought to You by Organized Crime?

Last updated on September 29th, 2022 at 02:43 pm

Luxury Furniture | Avoiding Global Rainforest Destruction | Choosing Sustainable American Made Furniture
Organized crime is currently responsible for an unprecedented rate of rainforest destruction.  Unchecked illegal logging is rampant in tropical countries too poor to effectively monitor and enforce conservation regulations.  You can help save the rainforest by avoiding the purchase of imported forest products like wood furniture and flooring.

Forest conservation is at the heart of our mission at Vermont Woods Studios and we’re always trying to raise awareness about where your wood furniture comes from.  If you’re committed to buying American made furniture— no worries.  Chances are it’s made from legal wood, sustainably harvested from well-managed forests right here in North America.

But if you’re buying imported wood furniture (70% of furniture sold in America is imported) then: Houston, we have a problem.

A recent Washington Post article by Brad Plumer entitled Organized Crime is Getting Rich Cutting Down the Rainforest describes how the illegal logging trade has become just as lucrative (and far more destructive) than the drug-trafficking industry.  50 to 90 percent of forestry in tropical areas is now controlled by criminal groups!  “A great deal of logging simply takes place illegally — much of it in tropical areas such as the Amazon Basin, Central Africa, and Southeast Asia.” (ref: United Nations and Interpol)

The U.N. estimates that illicit logging is now worth between $30 billion to $100 billion, or up to 30 percent of the global wood trade.  That illegal wood is often shipped from pristine rainforests to China, Vietnam and other third world countries where it’s fabricated into low quality furniture which is sold to US consumers. We’ve written quite a bit about the links between rainforest destruction, global warming and the furniture and flooring you choose for your home:

If you’re considering buying furniture at IKEA, Home Depot or any big box store… ask where the lumber originates and let us know what you find on our Facebook or in the comments section below.  Then re-discover sustainable, American made wood furniture and join us in feeling good about your furniture and your green home.

Extension Tables

Solid Wood Extension Tables
This eco-friendly Solid Wood Extension Table is handmade in Vermont using sustainably harvested wood.  Have you ever wondered who thought up extension tables in the first place?   “Let’s saw this table top in two.  Then we can stick a couple boards in between the 2 halves and extend the table when company comes.”  Just saying…  it might have sounded a little crazy at first.

January is a popular month to shop for dining tables.  I guess every year, around the holidays people decide “this is going to be my last year entertaining around this old table!  It’s too small, it’s too old, it’s not the right shape…”  So we build a lot of dining tables in January and this year, they are almost all extension tables.

Who ever thought up the idea of extension tables in the first place?  I mean… “let’s saw this table top in two.  Then we can stick a couple boards in between the 2 halves and extend the table when company comes.”  Pretty innovative, but it must have sounded a little crazy at first– don’t you think?

Extension tables have come a long way since some creative person designed the first one.  Now you can get extension tables with 1, 2, 3 or more leaves (our furniture makers have been known to build custom tables with as many as 5 leaves).  The leaves can be self-storing, with butterfly mechanisms or little cubbies under the table for convenient storage.  With 3 or more leaves there is usually an extra leg tucked under the table top for extra support.

At Vermont Woods Studios, our extension tables are handcrafted of real solid wood and 100% American made by Vermont craftspeople.  They can be customized in Cherry, Maple, Black Walnut, or Oak wood.  And you can choose from different designs to suit the shape and style of your dining room: drop leaf, trestle, split pedestal, single pedestal and double pedestal.

Looking for a particular style or shape?  Browse through Shaker, modern, mission, French country, traditional, craftsman and mid-century modern styles in round to oval and square to rectangular shapes.

Vermont Furniture Artisans Displays Exquisite Craftsmanship at Stowe Expo

Last updated on March 13th, 2019 at 01:48 pm

Steve Holman's Sideboard at "Source" expo | Vermont Custom Furniture
Steve Holman’s Curvy Drawer Sideboard is featured at Source, an exhibition of exquisite and creative Vermont custom furniture and craftspeople with a focus on the source of all elements that collaborate to make the final piece.  Source is now playing at the Helen Day Art Center in Stowe, Vermont.

Vermont Custom Furniture Showcased in Stowe

Vermont custom furniture takes center stage this month at the Helen Day Art Center in Stowe.   Members of the Guild of Vermont Furniture Makers are showcasing examples of their work, which (in my humble opinion) is among the finest custom furniture you’ll find anywhere.

The Stowe expo, Source  focuses on the origin of all elements that collaborate to make the final exquisite and creative piece. “The exhibit maps the source of materials, the relationships between forester, mill and craftsperson, as well as the path that the artists took (who influenced them, and where they learned their craft) to become furniture makers”.

Many of our favorite Vermont custom furniture makers are represented in Stowe, including: George Ainley, Erin Hanley, James Becker, Steve Holman, Hugo Belton, David Hurwitz, Richard Bissell, Bill Laberge, Dave Boynton, Mario Messina, Tim Clark, Dan Morsheim, Doug Clarner, Pete Novick, Johns Congdon, Walt Stanley and Bob Gasparetti.

Where Does Your Furniture Come From?

At Vermont Woods Studios our focus has always been on “where does your furniture come from” particularly from an environmental perspective (where is the wood from and was it sustainably harvested).

What I love about this expo is that it takes a broader look into the origin of these works of art, focusing on the artists, their inspirations and the chain of partners involved in getting their wood from the forest to their studios.

If you’re heading up to Stowe to ski and you love woodworking, be sure to make time to stop at the Helen Day Center for a relaxing and inspiring visit.  Hours are Wednesday – Sunday 12pm-5pm and by appointment.  Admission is by donation.  It’s well worth the trip!

High Quality Wood Furniture: Tips For Finding the Best Craftsmanship

Last updated on August 3rd, 2018 at 01:27 pm

High Quality WoHardwood Furnitureod Bedroom Furniture | Cherry Moon Bed
This high quality wood furniture is part of our Cherry Moon Bedroom Collection.  It’s handmade with real, solid cherry wood and topped with a hand-rubbed natural oil finish.

If you’re shopping for high quality wood furniture, you’re seeking craftsmanship that will be beautiful, remarkable and make your investment last a lifetime, right?  It isn’t necessarily hard to find quality craftsmanship, but you’ll have to veer off the beaten big box path and steer over to the local furniture makers in your neighborhood.

Now before you get nervous about price, know that with high quality wood furniture (and most other things, I suppose), you truly do get what you pay for.  A good craftsman will save you money in the long run because quality wood furniture lasts a lifetime.  It’s something you can hand down to your children and grandchildren.

As you’re shopping for this investment, here are a few things to look for:

Real Solid HardWood Throughout

Top quality hardwoods that are grown in America and suitable for high end furniture include black cherry wood, black walnut wood, oak, maple, ash and birch.  These wood species have high densities and tight, non-resinous grains.  Plus they sand well and polish to a silky smooth and supple finish.

Hand Made in America

Furniture that’s hand made in America gets an immediate gold star for integrity, just for the fact that the wood is legally and sustainably harvested (this is often not the case with imported furniture).  You  can also feel good that USA made furniture is creating American jobs and sustainable economies.  Another benefit: no worries about toxic finishes and glues (common in imported furniture) that might offgas in your home or be ingested by small children.

Drawers Made of Solid Wood with Dovetail Joinery and Robust Drawer Slides

Drawers and Doors provide perhaps the quickest and easiest quality check on  craftsmanship.  Make sure they are well fitted and adjusted properly.  Drawers and doors should close easily and be flush with the cabinet front.  The hardware should be substantial and adjustable in case of jostling during shipping and moving processes be sure to have your delivery crew make any necessary adjustments before they leave your home).

Smooth and Supple Furniture Finish

When you run your hand over a piece of high quality wood furniture, it should be as soft and smooth as a person’s skin.  Fine wood furniture is sanded many times and eventually with a very fine grit sandpaper.  The finish is typically a traditional hand-rubbed oil finish or a lacquer.

High Quality Wood Furniture Deserves A Lifetime Guarantee

I can’t imaging getting a lifetime guarantee in a big box store but most local craftsmen are happy to give a lifetime guarantee on their handmade wood furniture.

Top Quality Bedroom Furniture Sets: How to Get the Best Price

Last updated on August 14th, 2018 at 03:55 pm

Top Quality Solid HardWood Bedroom Furniture Sets | Best Prices
This Contemporary Craftsman Bedroom Furniture Set is handmade of real, solid hardwood by Vermont craftspeople.  Customers can get a 20% discount on this top quality bed, dresser, chest and night stand when purchasing 3 or more pieces together.

Tips for Buying Fine Quality Wooden Furniture

If you’re shopping for top quality bedroom furniture sets, I’m sure you’ve noticed they’re priced considerably higher than the run of the mill sets you’ll find at Jordan’s or Bernie and Phyls.  But if you want timeless, real hardwood furniture you’ll have for a lifetime, (something you’ll never have to replace) then what you’re really interested in is getting the best value, not the lowest price, right?  My suggestion: first find the best quality furniture you can afford (here’s a solid wood furniture buying guide to help with that) in the style and wood species you love.

American Made or Imported?

Second, check to see where it’s made.  If it’s imported furniture, you probably want to keep shopping.  Honestly, I rarely hear complaints about the quality of virtually any American made, solid hardwood furniture (and the more local you buy, the better chance you have of getting the craftsperson or manufacturer to stand behind the product over it’s lifetime).  On the other hand, there are dozens of consumer review sites filled with complaints about the imported furniture products found at big box stores like Ikea, Ashley and Bob’s.  Quality can be quite poor and there’s little chance of getting satisfactory customer service.

How to Get the Best Furniture Value

Once you’ve found your favorite top quality, American made bedroom furniture, crafted of real solid hardwood, then start to work with the craftsman or retailer to get their best discount price. Remember however that American furniture involves using real, legal, sustainably harvested wood and American craftsmanship.  Furthermore, US furniture makers don’t typically “mark up to mark down” so you’re unlikely to find “discounts up to 80%”.  But often there is room for some negotiation.

Buy Top Quality Furniture in Sets to Get a Volume Discount

At Vermont Woods Studios for instance, we have a standing discount of 20% on bedroom sets* plus we offer a discount on full service white glove shipping and delivery when customers are buying 3 or more pieces.  Like many online retailers, we offer a coupon code (BEDROOMSET20) for customers who prefer to purchase fine furniture online (be sure to “update cart” to get the discount).  Otherwise customers can give us a call or stop by our showroom to receive the discount.

So my advice, if you’re shopping for the best price on high quality, real solid wood beds, chests, dressers, armoires, night stands, mirrors, blanket boxes and such is to focus on quality and style first.  Find the American made bedroom furniture you love that will last a lifetime and then negotiate on price afterwards.  My sense is that in doing the research you’ll find most USA made fine furniture is honestly priced and retailers are looking to give both you and the craftsman a fair deal.

Copeland bedroom sets are excluded from the 20% discount as they already carry a low price guarantee every day in our store.

Wooden Furniture and Rainforest Conservation

Last updated on June 22nd, 2022 at 09:54 am

Saving the Rainforest | Sustainable Wooden Furniture and Flooring | What's the Connection?
Global rainforest destruction continues to proceed at a rate of > 1 acre per second.  It’s the greatest extinction in the history of the earth.  Once the rainforest is gone, it’s gone forever.  It doesn’t regenerate like our northern temperate forests.  Interested in conserving the rainforest and preserving the iconic species who’ve lived there for millions of years?  Learn how your choices for furniture, flooring and other forest products can help.

Where Does Your Wooden Furniture Come From?

Ever wonder where your wooden furniture comes from?  Seven years ago I founded Vermont Woods Studios because I didn’t like the answer to that question.  And the answer is:  if you didn’t  purchase American made furniture, yours may well have originated in a beautiful tropical rainforest that was being plundered by illegal logging activities.

One Acre of Rainforest Disappears Every Second

I spent the first few years at Vermont Woods Studios trying to raise awareness about rainforest devastation and how it’s driven by the wood furniture and flooring industries.  Did you know that the rainforest is disappearing at the rate of >1 acre every second?  It sounds unbelievable and sensationalist, doesn’t it?  I mean that’s over 4000 football fields every hour of every.  But it’s true and that fact is why we continue to work so hard to offer sustainable, locally made furniture at this Vermont furniture store.

You and I Have the Power to Save the Rainforest

Consumers of wood furniture, flooring and other forest products are the key to saving the rainforest.  If you’re taking the trouble to learn about sustainable wooden furniture and how you, as a consumer, can be part of the global solution, we want to help.  I’ll be writing a series of blogs over the next few months to provide some background information regarding the past, present and future of the rainforest and how we consumers can do our part to save it.  Have any rainforest references or stories you’d like to share?  Join the conversation on our Facebook.

Cherry Shaker Furniture

cherry shaker furniture sale

Since the late 1700’s Shaker has been a popular furniture style. Originally, most pieces of Shaker furniture were either painted or stained to make the piece of furniture more attractive, and as a way to protect the wood. Today, painting shaker furniture is a rarity; however, the wood species remain the same. Cherry Shaker furniture is one of the most sought after designs in the furniture industry. Like the original Shaker furniture designs, we wouldn’t dream of importing exotic wood, like mahogany, for furniture. Vermont Woods Studios’ Shaker furniture is made from sustainably harvested American woods, with cherry being the most popular. Natural cherry wood is one of the most prized hardwoods in the United States, and is excellent wood for furniture. Many would no longer dream of painting such a distinct, fine wood. Instead, a clear finish is applied to the furniture offering optimal protection for the wood.  A clear finish helps enhance the natural beauty of the cherry wood, instead of covering it up by paint.

If you’re looking to add a piece of cherry Shaker furniture to your home, now is the time. Right now we are having a Winter Shaker Style Furniture Sale. We offer over 200 pieces of Shaker influenced furniture, ranging from traditional styles to a more contemporary style. Save 10% on one piece, 15% on two pieces, or 20% on three or more pieces of Shaker style furniture. Each of our Shaker furniture pieces are backed by a lifetime guarantee and come with free shipping!

Shop for your new cherry Shaker furniture securely, easily, and conveniently from our online gallery. Our furniture specialists are also available to assist you through our Live Chat option (located in the top right corner of our online gallery), by phone (888-390-5571), or by email.

This sale ends on Thursday, January 17 at midnight.

*Sale excludes Copeland Furniture

Copeland Furniture: How To Get The Best Price

Last updated on March 13th, 2019 at 03:10 pm

Copeland Furniture | Monterey Bedroom Set | Best Prices
If you’re looking to purchase Copeland furniture, like most shoppers, you’re  looking for the best price and most dependable shipping & delivery service (shown above, Copeland’s Monterey collection blends modern Asian design with elements of traditional American Arts and Crafts).

Copeland Furniture

Copeland furniture is one of Vermont’s most recognizable home furniture brands. For over 30 years, Tim Copeland and his family have been building a reputation for world class, high end furniture in a variety of crisp, clean designs.  Shaker style defined Copeland’s early furniture but over the years many additional styles have evolved.  The Monterey collection (shown above) blends Asian design with elements of traditional American Arts and Crafts.  More recent collections like the Astrid, Catalina and SoHo collections reflect American mid-century modern designs.

How to Get the Best Prices

If you’re looking to purchase Copeland furniture, like most shoppers you’re probably looking for the best price.  And you’ve noticed that all retailers are charging essentially the same price.  Well, that’s no coincidence.  Like many furniture companies, Copeland publishes a minimum price that retailers must abide by.  This is the lowest price you’ll ever see on Copeland furniture in any retail store.  It’s a fair price and commensurate with the true value of Copeland’s furniture.  It’s meant to help keep Copeland’s retailers from going out of business, declaring bankruptcy and damaging the Vermont furniture industry.  Thus if you’re shopping for Copeland furniture you’re not going to get less than this price unless you’re buying a floor model, a return or a scratch and ding sample.

So… first thing when shopping for Copeland furniture is to make sure you insist on getting this minimum price.

Buy Copeland Furniture in Sets and Save on Shipping

Next thing, especially if you’re shopping online is to negotiate the lowest price for white glove shipping and delivery.  This is an important service as  you do not want a box full of expensive, high end, HEAVY furniture being delivered to your home by UPS.  Or placed on the curbside (a common practice) when you have no way to get it into the house and possibly up a flight of stairs or two.

The best way to save on white glove shipping is to purchase Copeland furniture as a set.  If a retailer charges the typical $300 per item for white glove shipping and delivery, that adds up quickly.  Buy the furniture as a set instead and pay a total of $450 to ship all the pieces together.  Buying several pieces?  You could save hundreds or even thousands.

At Vermont Woods Studios, because we are just down the road from Copeland Furniture  we ship more efficiently and economically than other retailers.  That savings is passed on to our customers.   We are committed to offering the best prices on Copeland Furniture and even have a low price guarantee.
