The Beauty of a Buffet

Our Classic Shaker Flare Leg Hunt Board and Nantucket Dining Chair

More than just storage, I’ve come across creative uses of sideboards & buffets and I’m sharing them with you!

Before I worked in the furniture industry, I looked at China Cabinets and sideboards as clunky furniture that my parents stored their fancy fine china in. I didn’t look at them as a necessary piece of furniture. Now though, I know just important they are and how useful they can be!

5 Reasons To Start Using A Desk Again

Last updated on March 6th, 2018 at 01:46 pm

Our Cherry Moon Office Furniture and Guest-Style Windsor Chair all in Cherry Wood.

When did using a desk become a thing of the past?

I want you to think about the last few homes you visited. Do remember if they had an office or designated area in their home for a desk? When I think about, the majority of the homes I visit, in fact don’t have an office space and if they do, it’s seldom used.

When did using a desk become taboo? While I know we won’t come up with an exact answer here, I have a hunch that it’s related to our constant on-the-go mentality and separation anxiety from our electronics.

Setting The Record Straight With Cherry Wood Furniture

Last updated on October 22nd, 2018 at 09:21 am

Our Modern American Executive Desk in natural Cherry wood

With so much imitation out there, we’re here to help you see what natural cherry wood really looks like

Recently our Founder and CEO, Peggy Farabaugh, wrote about what to expect with natural cherry wood furniture. One of the key pieces of information she shared is that cherry wood furniture’s color matures over time. It will start in a light pink tone and as it’s exposed to light, it will ripen into a rich reddish brown color.

I wanted to create a list featuring a variety of our products in cherry wood to showcase the different stages of maturity you’ll see with real cherry wood. (note: Our natural cherry pieces are not finished with stains or toners to alter its color, just a surface protecting finish is applied. Stains are available on some pieces if a deeper, richer color is desired)

Brandon Panel Bed

In this picture you see both light pink and golden red coloring amongst the boards, which is not uncommon as the lumber could be coming from two different trees. Over time as the wood darkens though, the pieces should blend into the same classic rich red color.

Modern American Dining Table and Modern American Bench

Both of these modern designed pieces are made with real cherry wood and an oil and wax finish was used. As the picture shows, these pieces have a rich, golden-red color to them with the pink undertones still blending into the wood.

New England Shaker Bed

Our New England Shaker Bed in Natural Cherry wood.

As seen here, this piece has less of a pink tone to it and more of a red/brown coloring typically seen in cherry wood furniture that has aged over time. It has turned from a light colored wood, to a classic, rich red and golden-brown hued color.

Berkeley 3 Drawer Small Chest of Drawers

Our Berkeley 3 Drawer Small Chest of Drawers in Natural Cherry Wood

Here you see a nightstand in natural cherry wood with a lacquer finish (walnut pulls) that looks very light in comparison to the rest of the furniture I’ve shown you. But even this piece will darken the more it’s exposed to light.

By now you’re probably noticing that cherry wood furniture really can vary in wood tone even on the same piece of furniture.

4 Reasons to Love Vermont Woods Studios Storage Beds

Last updated on September 4th, 2018 at 04:45 pm

Our popular Copeland Dominion Storage Bed helps me introduce you to our newest collection of storage beds

Showcasing our Newest Collection of Storage Beds

When was the last time you looked under your bed? Does the thought of what might be hiding under it frighten you? Do thoughts of “so that’s where I put that” or “why is that under here” come to mind? If the time has come for you to make better use of the space under your bed  then you are in luck. We just added 4 brand new stylish & functional storage beds that offer a perfect solution for organizing the clutter that may be living under your bed.

Before I go into detail about our new storage beds though, I want to tell you a quick story. Around Christmas time I decided to rearrange my bedroom. I brilliantly thought I could move my king size bed without worrying about the contents underneath it. Boy was I wrong.

After pulling out what felt like my entire life’s contents, I realized I was in over my head. I had three long plastic bins, two filled to the brim with clothes while the other was filled with knick-knacks, stacks of newspapers from my student journalism days and tons of books. In-between the bins were stacks of even more books, boxes filled with odds and ends, electronics and wires and a stack of grad school info pamphlets and an LSAT study book I had bought in my post undergrad panic.

Needless to say, under my bed had turned into a catch all place and I needed to do something about it. Does my story resonate with any of you? If not, I envy your organization! If it did though, maybe it is time to consider a storage bed like I did.

Beds with built in under-bed storage are great for holding bed linens, clothing you don’t wear very often or even out-of-season clothing if your home is short on storage space. And, they generally deter people from tossing things under them and inevitably being forgotten about.

We have integrated storage drawers into four of our more popular styles, creating both modern and traditional designs with the added benefit of 4 more drawers of storage space.

Here are four reasons to love our new storage beds:

  • Form and Function: As shown with our Raised Carriage Queen Storage Bed, our storage beds are functional with added storage space while maintaining a high-end, classic design.

  • Quality Craftsmanship: Our Andrews Spindle Queen Storage Bed exemplifies true Vermont craftsmanship. You will know when you see your new bed arrive that it was made with extreme attention to detail by local craftspeople who truly care about the quality of your bed.

  • Ambiance: Nothing ruins the look of a newly renovated bedroom quicker than the sight of plastic bins under the bed. Our Patti Smith Queen Storage Bed eliminates the need for bins or boxes completely. With the added 4 drawers of storage space, this bed flows with the atmosphere of your room and won’t detract from its sophistication.

Storage Beds

While I have yet to master my underbed storage plan, that doesn’t mean you can’t! These beds and more are available at our online gallery. So save yourself from shuffling those underbed bins and boxes around and treat yourself to one of our Vermont made solid wood storage beds.

Our Vermont made furniture is available in Cherry, Maple, Oak and Walnut and the wood used is sourced from sustainably harvested forests in the Northeast. If you have any questions about our furniture or mission we’re always available at 888-390-5571. Our Stonehurst Showroom is open seven days a week and we’d love to show you around.

Decorating Dilemmas Solved

American Mission Coffee Table and End Table both in Cherry

Liven Up Your Living Room

With the long New England Winter in full force, I’ve been spending more and more time in my family’s living room. Easily the warmest in the house, we all cuddle around in it reading, watching a movie or coloring in our favorite new adult coloring books.

I’ve noticed recently though that while the couch and love-seat match, the rest of the furniture doesn’t. The end table is all that’s left of a living room set my parents got when my sister and I were children, the coffee table is a (very) small wooden chest and the TV console is a hand-me-down from my grandmother (so probably bought at a big-box store) that now has a couple corners nibbled out from our always hungry black lab.

Needless to say, our living room is in desperate need of an upgrade. If you’re living room is well loved like my family’s and has seen better days or if you’re looking to update to it, then why not think about the occasional tables? (Assuming your couch isn’t in need of replacing)

The most used and most visible table is the coffee table, and I’d start there. Sometimes you can get away with a unique coffee table that you found antiquing or re-purpose an old trunk but you want to be careful and make sure it blends with the theme of your room.

Knowing my mom has a penchant for Old New England style furniture, I would choose the Classic Shaker Flare Oval Coffee Table. The flared legs elevate the tables look and give it an air of sophistication, while the sleek lines and simple design will never go out of trend. The round design also gives off a feeling a openness and inclusion.

Once settled on a coffee table, I would move next to the end tables. To match the coffee table, I would choose our Classic Shaker Flare Leg Round End Table. I would get two, one for each side of the couch. What I like about this table in particular is its size. The table top is just big enough for a table lamp and maybe your remotes…it doesn’t allow for clutter to accumulate.

Lastly, I would get the Classic Shaker Flare Leg Sofa Table to complete the set. The great thing about sofa tables is their versatility. I wouldn’t use it in the traditional way you’d think to use a sofa table. I would use it as a side table to complement a large black and white picture of the Chrysler Tower hanging on one wall in our living room.

Just as a piece of jewelry or an accessory can make or break an outfit, your accent tables can do the same for your room. Right now my family’s living room is a hodge podge of pieces that don’t really work cohesively. We need to scrap the mismatched furniture and start over.

If you’re feeling the same way about your living room, then maybe it is time to get new accent tables. All of our occasional tables are available in Cherry, Maple, Oak or Walnut woods and are handmade by local craftspeople. Dress your room in the finest wood furniture Vermont has to offer.

Our knowledgeable and friendly sales team is always here to answer any questions you may have about our furniture. You can contact us toll free at (888) 390-5571 or by visiting our historic Showroom in Vernon, Vermont.

Introducing The Copeland Canto Collection

Hairpin Legs Never Looked So Good

Editor’s Note: The Copeland Canto Collection has been discontinued

I think it’s safe to say every generation is influenced by its predecessor one way or another. I like to think that it’s always for the better, because each generation learns how to improve upon the work of those before them. And with that in mind, I’ve noticed that now more than ever we’re seeing a strong desire for retro inspired products.

Unless you never go out, you can’t avoid running into vintage style ads, soda cans, game boards, fashion trends and furniture designs. There’s hardly an industry that hasn’t been impacted by this demand for retro inspired products. Our newest furniture, Copeland’s Canto Collection is just that, a retro inspired modern take on a classic 1940’s design: hairpin style legs.

Hairpin legs, originally designed by Henry P. Glass in 1941 as part of an outdoor furniture collection used less metal (you can assume to accommodate metal rationing during WWII) all while keeping the strength of traditional legs. Once released, the design quickly rose to popularity and influenced furniture inside the home, from dining chairs to ottomans.

Today you’ll see this back in style design everywhere from Target to One Kings Lane, West Elm and everywhere in-between. If you love the retro look of the hairpin legs and you want it attached to high-quality solid wood bedroom furniture, look no further. Our Copeland Canto Collection, handmade in Vermont, combines the captivating leg design with solid walnut wood for a look that is truly unique.

The Canto Bed is designed with two hairpin legs at the foot of the bed and two solid walnut tapered legs at the head of the bed. The headboard is framed in walnut wood and comes upholstered in a variety of Microsuede and colorful fabrics. The bed is available in Queen and both King and California King sizes.

Pair the Canto Bed with the Canto Walnut 3, 4 or 5-Drawer Chests, 1-Drawer Nightstand and Canto 6 or 8-Drawer Dressers.

Relax in mid century modern style with this one-of-a-kind collection now available at Vermont Woods Studios.

American Made Outdoor Furniture: What’s The Best Wood?

Last updated on June 30th, 2022 at 02:59 pm

Best Wood for Outdoor Furniture?
I think the best wood to use for outdoor furniture isn’t wood at all. It’s POLYWOOD, made out of recycled milk jugs and guaranteed for a lifetime of outdoor use.  Shown here is the new Bayline Dining Furniture Collection.

Tis the season for buying outdoor furniture and prepare for spring and summer!  Even in Vermont we have a couple nice days each year when everyone wants to lounge in the sun with a cold drink and a good book.

Our customers often discover us when they’re searching for American made, eco-friendly furniture.  We’ve worked in collaboration with Vermont furniture makers for many years but have stuck to selling just sustainable indoor furniture for the dining room, bedroom and home office.

So when customers began to ask for outdoor porch, pool and patio furniture we were at a loss.  What type of wood could we make it out of?  The cherry, maple, walnut and oak woods we typically use for indoor furniture won’t hold up to outdoor conditions.  Plus, we offer a lifetime guarantee on our furniture.  How would we do this for an outdoor line?

Adirondack Chairs | Polywood | Recycled Plastic
This POLYWOOD Classic Adirondack chair is made in America of recycled plastic.  We guarantee it for a lifetime of use!

American Made Outdoor Furniture

We considered many options.  Teak and mahogany are about the only types of wood that would meet our standards for weather resistance and longevity but they are both rainforest woods that are often harvested illegally and unsustainably.  Not an option.

So after researching all the alternatives we selected an American made wood-alternative material for our first outdoor furniture line. It’s called poly wood and it’s made in Indiana of recycled plastic milk jugs.  It’s not real wood, but it has the look, thickness, weight, and feel of real wood plus it’s virtually indestructible and maintenance free.  No more scraping, painting, or weatherproofing needed.  POLYWOOD recycled plastic furniture can even be left outside year round eliminating the need for seasonal storage.

So that’s what we chose for our first outdoor furniture line.  We really do feel that POLYWOOD is the best “wood” to use for outdoor furniture.  With summer being so short up here in Vermont, we want to spend it enjoying our all-weather outdoor furniture rather than maintaining it!  How about you?  Check out the POLYWOOD furniture collections we offer.  It’s eco-friendly, Made in America outdoor furniture and it comes with free shipping and a lifetime guarantee.  Pretty tough to beat, I say.

Rec ycled Plastic Chaise Lounge
This POLYWOOD chaise lounge weighs over 50# so it won’t blow away when high winds come in off the ocean.  It’s available in 12 different colors including red, yellow, blue, orange, green, black and white.
