Egypt Drawing 19

A statement about the "Egypt Drawing" series: "An artist friend, who was leaving Egypt, left me her collection of powdered pigments and a roll of transparent rice paper. The earth pigments - yellow ochre, red and iron oxides - were found in the desert and ground fine. The blue was powdered indigo. I liked the challenge of working with new materials. By rubbing pigment into the papers with my hands I discovered depth, space and atmosphere emerged out of the transparent papers. I sometimes painted with ink or worked both sides of the paper, creating a ghost-like palimpsest image. These images are reminiscent of the natural world." Susan Osgood, 2013
