Top 5 Dining Table Designs: All About That Base

We always put so much focus on the tabletop, but what about those legs?

I’m a perfectionist by nature and attention to detail has always been something I pride myself on. That being said, it can make doing things, like shopping for a new dining table, a challenge sometimes. I tend to be really indecisive because I like knowing what I’m choosing is the best possible product for me. I take everything from color, material used, shape, size and design into consideration. But what about the base of a table? It can aesthetically make or break a room, so why do the table tops get all of the attention?

Regardless of whether you too agonize over tapered legs versus flare legs, or a pedestal table versus a trestle table, I’ve come up with a way to choose the right table for you, based on well, the base!

4 Leg Tables

Designed for entertaining in mind, our Woodland Custom Dining Table is simple with added flair. It’s round edged legs and curved apron make this more than just a 4-Leg cherry wood table. Pair with our Grand Mission Chairs for sophistication or dress it down and make it more homey with a matching bench.
ADDED BENEFIT: 4 Leg tables are classic and because of their simple design, they transcend many style themes and generations to come.

Trestle Tables

This Modern American Dining Table takes the trestle table into the 21st century. With straight lines and an almost Asian inspired design, the base of this table really makes a statement. The wide legs and center support beam draw your eyes downward, and the legs are designed so that you don’t necessarily need “head of table” chairs.
ADDED BENEFIT: The center support, being more than just a support beam, adds character and style to your dining table.

Pedestal Tables

What I love about our New Traditions Round Pedestal Table is the detail in the leg. The center support with its four curved edges and angled feet, give this strong table a look of sophistication and simple elegance. The apron around the top of the table strategically blends the four edges of the leg giving the table a polished result.
ADDED BENEFIT: The simple design allows you to dress up the table however you’d like. You can use modern style chairs or traditional-anything would work with this table.

Parsons Tables

Parsons tables were first designed in the 1930’s by French designer Jean-Michel Frank in a class he was teaching for a satellite campus of the Parsons School of Design in Paris, France. Authentic Parsons tables are square or rectangular with square cylindrical legs that are equal in proportion to the height of the table skirt.

Farmhouse Tables

Although the term “farm table” can apply to all sorts of different furniture designs, when we think farm table we usually think a solid wood, rectangular table with four legs. Often times, farm tables will be made from recycled or reclaimed wood like pine, chestnut, or oak. You’ll almost always see eased edges, a straight apron, and either tapered, turned, or straight wood legs. Breadboard ends are fairly common in farmhouse tables, also.
Looking for something a little more unique, you can always try one of our tripod, sled or double pedestal tables! We have over 80 table designs and each one has a base that been carefully and thoughtfully designed for it. When you’re looking for a new dining table, make sure you take the base into careful consideration!
If you have any questions about the designs of our tables or any of our solid wood furniture, our friendly sales team is here seven days a week at (888) 390-5571. Passing through Vermont? Stop into our historic Stonehurst Showroom and we’ll show you around!
