Vermont Made Walnut Furniture Featured In Woodworking Network Magazine
We extend our thanks to journalist and woodworker, Jo-Ann Kaiser who featured Vermont Woods Studios Walnut Furniture in Woodworking Network magazine, a respected source of "information and inspiration for professional woodworkers". Jo-Ann's article titled, "American Black Walnut: A Bold & Beautiful Furniture Species" talked not only about the beauty of walnut wood and it's growing popularity but also discussed the danger that walnut trees have been facing over the last 10 years.
It's called "1000 Canker's disease" and it typically kills walnut trees within three years of infection. Similar to other tree-attacking diseases that wiped out the American Chestnut and Elm trees, the spread of this one is fueled by people moving logs, walnuts and any part of the tree from infested areas into disease-free areas. It's spreading from the West to East and has already been found in Pennsylvania.
The situation is alarming and I mention it here in hopes that you will pass this on to anyone who may have walnut trees on their property or who uses walnut for firewood, nuts or lumber. People should contact their state department of agriculture for more information.
It would be a shame to see another beautiful (and valuable) tree species slip into extinction. Perhaps there is something we can do to avoid that.
Modern American Furniture
We're adding a new line of furniture at Vermont Woods Studios. It's called the Modern American Furniture Collection. Check out this mid-century style buffet. It's handcrafted in Vermont from solid black walnut wood. Kind of a blend of Art Deco and Scandinavian design, don't you think?
This is a brand new collection with new pieces emerging over the next few months. Check back often to see the collection evolve.
Custom Walnut Dining Furniture
Here's a photo of some beautiful custom walnut dining furniture sent to us by Robert T in Connecticut. Robert basically designed the buffet himself. He started with our Large Vertical-Buffet Media Center and had us craft it with just one side cabinet instead of two. He also increased the height of the unit from 60"H to 67"H. I think it came our beautifully.
Robert also customized our Round Back Chair. This is a chair we typically offer in cherry only, but Robert called to ask if we could craft it in walnut. Since we only make this chair style a couple times each year he had to wait, but he was willing to do that and look how nice they turned out!
The dining room set was completed with our Modern Contemporary Dining Table in solid walnut. The finish for the set is a hand-rubbed Danish oil.
Congrats to Robert for designing such a beautiful dining set. Enjoy!

Walnut Furniture: It’s Hot!
We've always offered black walnut as a choice for our Vermont Woods Studios furniture but to be honest, walnut hasn't been very popular these last several years. I'm not sure why, but lately the tables have turned! Just in the last few weeks we've had more inquiries for walnut furniture than over the past 2 years.
I think walnut is a stunning hardwood. It's a chocolate-brown color and generally much more figured than other local woods we work with. Walnut furniture has great character and richness.
Live edge walnut furniture seems to be what's really on fire now. Our friend and woodworking magician, Dan does a lot of work with live edge walnut. I think he's going to be very busy this year.
How do you like this live edge table? Greg built this one a couple months ago. The customer had a hand in designing this live edge showpiece and I love the way it turned out.

Customizing a 2-Tone Trestle Table
Rebecca, our new Vermont Woods Studios Furniture graphic designer has been working back and forth with a customer this week on a customized dining table. Adam liked our Oval Trestle Table shown on the website in maple, but he wanted it in a 2-tone combination of cherry and walnut wood.
The first idea Adam wanted to try was a solid walnut base with a cherry table top. Rebecca photo-shopped this image for him, but they both thought is was a bit too much walnut for his space.
So they toned down the walnut some with this version where the table was almost all cherry except for walnut feet, trestle and buttons over the trestle joints. Still too much walnut for Adam's taste.
Rebecca then emailed Adam this option and it turned out to be the Goldilocks version–not too much walnut, not too little, it was just right. I like it a lot and am hoping Adam will send us photos of his dining room once the new table is installed.
