Helping to Save the Rainforest and Stop Global Warming

September 24th, 2008 by Peggy Farabaugh

At Vermont Woods Studios our fundamental mission, as wooden furniture makers is to help steward the earth's forests. Did you know that worldwide, forest destruction generates more greenhouse gas emissions each year than do all the trains, planes and cars on the planet (ref:The Rainforest Foundation)?  Fully 20% of global greenhouse gas emissions are caused by forest destruction each year.

Here's something you can do to help save the rainforest and fight global warming. Don't buy tropical rainforest woods unless they are certified green by the Forest Stewardship Council, FSC (FSC is an independent third party certifier and is considered the gold seal of approval for responsibly harvested wood).  Tropical woods are those like Brazilian cherry, teak and mahogany and they are most commonly used in outdoor furniture, luxury high-end indoor furniture, architectural moldings and flooring.  Think twice before you purchase that exotic flooring from Lumber Liquidators!  Buy furniture and flooring that is crafted of local, sustainably-harvested woods, like cherry, maple, oak and walnut instead and you will be doing your part to help stop global climate change.
